“Hang Out” With President Lincoln, Courtesy of Steven Spielberg and Google

I don’t know whether to expect schmaltz or poetry, but the publicity machine is beginning to spin on behalf of Lincoln the Steven Spielberg biopic set to debut in November. Not only is there a trailer (well, more like a teaser, a snack, a peak) available on YouTube, but Google is sponsoring a live Lincoln “hang out” — an on-line forum that allows participants the chance to pose questions to Spielberg. In addition, the full trailer will be premiered during the hang out. Check the link for details. The syrupy music in the current teaser is a distraction.  I was hoping for a more pungent folk music sound reminiscent of what Mr. Lincoln would have enjoyed during his Kentucky or Illinois youth. However, you be the judge.

I sure hope this is a great movie! I WANT to see it!

I am eager to see it too, but I am also a cautious skeptic. Hollywood has a habit of producing entertainment, not history. Yet, Steven Spielberg has a good track record with serious subjects like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Schindler’s List.” But never doubt that I will be in line to buy a ticket.
