Here is an article from Slate that takes a spirited look at Thomas Jefferson’s response to one of the oldest forms of European snobbery leveled at the United States. The question of American “degeneracy” (an ingrained form of inferiority because of the rustic nature of the country) was closely examined by intellectuals in European salons of the 18th century. Thomas Jefferson was downright adamant in his defense of the virility and biological vigor of American animal species.
